Final Fantasy XV (2016) | Review

Recenty Added > Final Fantasy 15 (2016)

Overview

With Final Fantasy first time released in 1987 this title really won't die. And now with Final Fantasy XV (15 in roman letters) a lot has changed. It is still an action RPG though... After some delays it's now in my hands. So, let's have a look!

First Steps

Starting up, the game is first downloading for 30-20 minutes. So my exitement went well down again. But the patience was worth it! After selecting "New Game", the system asks me, if I'd like to do some basic tutorials (if you like, watch the tutorials). Sure! It teaches me "Combat Basics", "Warping and MP", "Resistances" and "Teamwork".
My first impression here is that combat is basically straight forward. Hit with "Circle", dodge with "Square", Warp with "Triangle" - So wait... "Warp" what the cookie is that. Let me explain (or watch the video as prompted above). With warp you can fast warp yourself either to a location in the environment, fast warp and hit an enemy or warp to a spot that is highlighted in the environment for strategic reasons. These spots are high up, e.g. on top of a rock or hanging off a pillar. This is quite neat and could bring quite a bit of wanted and needed action-speed into the gameplay.
Hit R2 for potions or equip spells that you crafted in the main menu before. - Also, when behind an object and you see a square, you can hide. This is not only for stealth but it also fills up your meters faster.

So I'm happy, up for more and hit "New Game" where I have the option for Easy or Normal.

Characters, Gears, Abilities

Without spoiling too much of the story, which is excellent so far, let me introduce you to the characters. Watch the Gears uncommented walkthrough.

Noctis Lucis Caelum (the player)

Noctis, Noct for his friends, is sent off by his father to marry his wife, who is somewhere in this world. He is accompanied by his friends Ignis, Prompto and Gladiolus.

Primary Arms
Noctis can equip 4 different weapons or spells which can be swapped ingame with the up, right, down, left buttons. He can equip all available gear (Swords, Greatswords, Polearms, Daggers, Firearms, Shields, Machinery, Royal Arms and Spells). - There are 13 Royal Arms, that can only be wielded by Noctis. Those have to be found in tombs that are scattered - and invisible - on the map.

Accessories
Bangles, Bracelets and Pendants that enhance the stats. - By enhancing abilities, more than one can be worn.

Special Skill: Fishing (read more in the Skills Section)
Ignis Scientia

One of Noctis' companions. His name "Scientia" means knowledge, science and he seems to be a clear minded personality. Ignis is responsible for cooking when the group spends the night in a camp.

Technique
Technique is the Team ability you can activate in a fight when you have the required amout of tech bars (tech builds up automatically in a fight). Techniques level up to a maximum level but it requires you to use them to do so.

"Mark" is Ignis' first Technique. When triggered, it sets up Noctis to warp-strike multiple enemies in succession with daggers.

Primary Arm
Daggers

Secondary Arm / Spell
Polearms. Alternatively he can be equipped with a spell, that needs to be crafted first in the "Elemancy" section of the Main Menu.

Accessories

"Piercer" is Prompto's first Technique. When triggered, it pierces the target with a firearm to hit multiple enemies in a line and reduces the enemies defense.

Gladiolus Amicitia

One of Noctis' companions. His surname "Amicitia" means "friendship". He's very loyal, tall and exeptionally fit. You can say, he's Noctis' main guard.

Special Skill: Survival (read more in the Skills Section)

Normally, if not changed by the story, those four will travel and fight together. So when moving Noctis around on the map, they will follow you. But there is someone else that comes along most of the times...

Regalia

The car and means of transport - custom built. She can be customized. Here, on this pic, silver with white racing stripes.

Skills

Fishing

Only Noctis can fish. Fishing spots have to be discovered on the map and are then displayed with a fish icon. By doing this mini game, edible or trophy (sellable) fish - and later on other junk in the water - can be caught with different Lines, Lures, Rods and Reels. There are many different fish. To make them bite, you need to pick the right lure.

Survival

Gladiolus' Skill.
The more you walk around in the world with the team, the better is the stuff Gladio will find after the fights. So keep walking.

Cooking

Ignis' Skill.
Only available at camps and not at paid lodging. Ignis will cook for the team and greatly enhances the stats. When eating in restaurants or scavenging drops from killing foes, Ignis can get inspired and come up with a new recipe.

Photography

Prompto's Skill.
Prompto will take photos during the day and show them to you when you rest at camps or lodgings. You can pick the best and save them to an album. Maximum album pictures: 100

Activities all over the world

There are plenty of things to do on the FFXV map. - If you have played the Final Fantasy titles before, you will know that the world was huge. You kept getting into new environments with new monsters to kill and problems to solve. Here, so far, there only seems to be one map. I've read some reviews, that you need about 8 minutes real time to drive from one end to the other and they think it's impressive. But if you look at the miles ingame, from the most eastern point (gates of Insomnia) to the most western point (Volcano Dungeon) its 7.13 miles linear distance.... uhmmmm.... yes...
BUT there is plenty to do. Next to the Main Quest line, there are...

Addendum:
In Chapter 9 Noctis is setting sail to Altissia (finally) - Here, there is a second world map. It is though a - compared to the first map -  a way smaller map and only contains Altissia City. It is a Final Fantacy Venice, where you travel around with gondolas.
The other, third map, is the Map of Tenebrae. Also a relatively small map compared to the first one.

Side Quest
They are marked as yellow question mark at the map and don't have to be discovered. Mostly, they are "go kill" and "go fetch" missions, as I know them in MMO's. So nothing really exciting.

Hunts
You can look up a list of available hunts in an area in every restaurant. Only one can be active. If you pick another one, the other will be abandoned. So stacking is not an option. There are some locked hunts though. That means, you need to upgrade your hunting rank. - After you picked one, go to the marked area, kill the marked monsters and go back to fetch the GIL (ingame currency) award.
And be aware this time, fighting is in real time (unless you pick the wait option in the game settings).

Fishing
Noctis can fish at various fishing spots that need to be discovered first. Fish for food or items.

Car upgrades and customisation
You can get (by quest) or buy various items to customise your car. Look for the car tag in the shops and then go to Hammerhead to customize the beauty.

Minigames

Play Pinball in one of the many diners.

Noctis' teammates sometimes want to spend some quality time with him while resting. Gladio likes some sporty activity, Ignis likes cooking and Prompto just likes to hang and talk.

Conclusion

Final Fantasy XV can live up to the hype - just. Even though the characters are too stereotype (the sporty, the brain and the ugly whitty), the Side Quests are lacking love and the map is small, it the end it makes fun to be able to roam freely and to almost do whatever you like. I spent my first 40 game hours just hunting, discovering, doing Side Missions and was surprised how fast time flies in real life. Open World is the right direction but they are partially still like on rails (e.g. driving the car). Graphics, especially in cinematic sequences are gorgeous!
For Final Fantasy fans and vets a must, to others I would recommend to watch a few videos first. Camzillasdad liked the graphics but was put off by the fighting mechanics.

From me:

8 / 10
